What are Enzymes?

Enzymes are proteins. Like other proteins, enzymes consist of long chains of amino acids held together by peptide bonds. They are present in all living cells, where they perform vital function by controlling the metabolic processes whereby nutrients are converted into energy and fresh cell material. Furthermore, enzymes take part in the breakdown of food material into simpler compounds. Some of the best known enzymes are those found in the digestive tract where pepsin, tropism and peptidases break down proteins into amino acids, lipases split fats in glycerol and fatty acids. And amylases break down starch into simple sugars.

BACTO-ZYME’s formulation promotes penetration and emulsification of oily or fatty substances to increase micro-organism activity. This accelerates destruction of odour causing conditions and gives BACTO-ZYME excellent cleaning agent properties. Its proprietary formulation has been designed to be non-hazardous and non-flammable. It has a slightly acidic (pH 3.5-4) organic composition. BACTO-ZYME works in a wide range of pH and temperatures. However, best at 95° F and between 3 to 9.5 pH.

Characteristics
  • Non-toxic – Non-imitating to most skin tissue, causes no rash or burn. If ingested accidentally in small amounts it may produce a laxative effect. If exposed to the eyes, flush immediately with water. Consult a physician.
  • Hypo-allergenic – Contains no known allergens contributory to skin, respiratory or other allergies. It is not offensive in odor. It is non-gaseous and can be used in poorly ventilated areas.
  • Non-flammable – Contains no combustible materials, is non-explosive and can be used near open flame.
  • Non abrasive – Contains no abrasive ingredients and can be used on most delicate surfaces and finishes that allow the use of water.
  • 100% Rinsibility – Washes off completely with water, leaving no bead stains or streaks. After rinsing, BACTO-ZYME leaves a non-static finish, thus inhibiting dust accumulation.
  • Easy application – Can be spray applied or poured onto surfaces to be treated. BACTO-ZYME does not require special equipment. The method used for application depends on the intended treatment or use.
  • Storage & shelf life – BACTO-ZYME should be stored below 120 F. Freezing temperatures are not harmful. BACTO-ZYME has an extended shelf life depending upon storage temperatures. It should be stirred well and mixed after any extended storage time.
Dilution rates
  • Airborne odors Dilute with water 100 to 1. Apply in mist form
  • Light industrial Dilute with water 40 to 1 for general cleaning
  • Equipment degreasing Dilute with warm water 30 to 1
  • Dilute 75 to 1 if using a pressure sprayer at 100 psi (some foaming will occur)
  • Septic tank for 750 gallon septic tank add 1 quart. Add 2-4 ounces per week, placed in various drains to keep all lines open
  • Carpet deodorizing Dilute 50 to 1 with warm water. Apply to carpet and rinse with plain water. Apply using a carpet shampooing machine
  • Drain lines Mix 2 ounces in 1 cup of warm water and pour in drain. Leave for 15 minutes and flush with hot water
  • Mechanical hard floors 3 ounces per gallon of water
  • Carpet cleaning 3 ounces per gallon of water

Freezing will not impair BACTO-ZYME, but may cause container to rupture.

BACTO-ZYME is water based and provided in a concentrated form to be diluted with water according to use and performance intent.

Grease Traps: Add one gallon of BACTO-ZYME to any trap up to 150 gallon capacity. If over 150 gallons, add one ounce per additional gallon. Follow with one gallon of lukewarm water. If added to open trap, spray exposed surfaces with a solution of one part BACTO-ZYME to 20 parts water, to deodorize. Each week add one quart of BACTO-ZYME per 150 gallons or less capacity. Add one ounce for every 5 gallons over 150 gallons to keep a free and odorless system. Septic Systems – Add 16 ounces of BACTO-ZYME for each 100 gallons of septic capacity. BACTO-ZYME may be flushed or poured in drains leading to the tank. Add one ounce of BACTO-ZYME for each 100 gallons weekly. Deodorize and restore adsorption fields with two gallons of BACTO-ZYME added to enough water to cover 400 square feet of field area, followed with a thorough wetting of water. Repeat after four days if needed.

Drains – BACTO-ZYME may be added directly from container or into drain lines by automatic dispenser. Add BACTO-ZYME at lowest use period. Always treat lowest levels of drains in system first.

Lift Stations and Wet Well – To prevent formation of a grease cap, add one ounce of BACTO-ZYME for each gallon capacity. Each week add % ounce of BACTO-ZYME per gallon capacity.

Drain Lines Mix ¼ cup Bacto-Zyme into ¾ cup Bacto-Zyme into drain slowly and let sit overnight. Flush with warm water in morning. Repeat application as necessary.
Septic TanksAdd 1 Quart Bacto-Zyme per 1,000 gallons tank capacity each week for the first month. Then add ¼ cup Bacto-Zyme per 1,000 gallons capacity per week for peak performance.
First AidEye Contact: Avoid eye contact. If product gets in eyes, immediately flush with water. Ingestion: Will cause a light laxative condition. Skin Contact: None Inhalation: If directly inhaled, with cause slight irritation to mucous membranes.

BACTO-ZYME for GREASE TRAP CONTROL

To free and prevent closed grease traps and eliminate odour
  1. Open the grease trap and spray the entire exposed surface with a dilution of 1 part Bacto-Zyme to 30 parts water to eliminate odour. Break all solidified grease loose from the side of the trap with a stiff scraper (large chunks of grease should be removed). Addition spraying of bacto-Zyme will help reduce odour during this operation.
  1. Pour a mixture of 1 part of Bacto-Zyme with 10 parts warm water. 75 to 100 F. Directly into the grease trap. One-half (1/2 gallon of Bacto-Zyme concentrate treats a 20 cu. Ft. Capacity grease trap.
  1. Re-spray all exposed surfaces and rinse the immediate are. Close and secure the grease trap.
  1. After closing the grease trap add an additional 4 ounces of Bacto-Zyme concentrate to all other drains feeding the grease trap and flush with one (1) quart of warm water.
Important Note: Daily application of Bacto-Zyme concentrate are vital to prevent grease and odour building up in your grease trap and drains. Pour 3 ounces of Bacto-Zyme with 3 parts of warm water into drains leading to the grease trap during lowest flow period.

Bacto-Zyme for Cleaning Water Pollution

Re: method use for cleaning polluted lakes and ponds in China

Material used: 50 gallons of Bacto-Zyme concentrate per hectare of surface area.
A small boat was outfitted with a pump that would pull water from the lake or pond and mix it with the Bacto-Zyme concentrate at the rate of 20-40 to 1. About half of the mixture was sprayed on the surface of the lake or pond. The other half was injected about 15cm below the surface during the spraying operation.
In this case, the water was cleared within a week. However, the amount of concentrate needed and time required will vary with the condition on the pond.

ODOUR CONTROL FOR FARMSTEADS, MANURE PILES, & PONDS USING BACT0-ZYME

  • Use one gallon of Bacto-Zyme to 100 gallons of water 9one quart to 25 gallons water). Mix the water and Bacto-Zyme in a tank. Spray a fine mist of the mixture over the offending area until the material is damp. This mixture can be applied to either dry or wet piles of odorous material.
  • In the case of pond, or lagoons the same mixture would apply, but it any take a heavier application
  1. This should greatly reduce the odour. Reapply as needed to control the odour. After using, assess the results and see how the mixture will control the problem.
  • It may be necessary to adjust the mixture over time, to either a stronger or weaker ratio of Bacto-Zyme to the water, depending on the observed results.
Bacto-Zyme for Septic Tanks and Dog Runs
  • Bacto-Zyme promotes the growth of bacteria in septic tanks and assists in digestion and liquidation of solids. It Emulsifies digests the fats and grease to open up absorption fields and keeps lines clean and free of build-up. Also Eliminates odours!
  • Initial Treatment: One quart of Bacto-Zyme per 750 gallons of septic tank capacity. Either place direct into tank or into nearest drain or toilet.
Maintenance dosage: use 1 to 2 ounces per week in any drain for preventative maintenance. Use different drains (kitchen, bathe, etc.) each time you use Bacto-Zyme. This will keep all drains lines free of build-up
Leach field Treatment: An additional one quart of Bacto-Zyme may need to be applied in addition to the above initial treatment for the septic tank. If there is an odour emanating from above the leach field, spray Bacto-zyme using a garden spray attachment or other garden sprayer. A dilute spray will eliminate the dour. Repeat as necessary.
  • Dog Runs: dilute Bactto-Zyme with 30 to 40 parts water and spray on drop runs to eliminate odours. Repeat as required. Bacto-Zyme will not harm animals through casual contact.

I am writing to tell you of two very successful experiences I have had with the product “Bacto-Zyme”.

One involved the care of a bedfast patient at home with a large crater-like bedsore with an infection that had tunnelled deep into the wound. I was unable to see the infection, but I had no trouble smelling it, nor did anyone else who came into her room!

Bacto-Zyme was sprayed directly into the bedsore, onto the skin, linen and in the air. This produced an instant and sustained loss of that mal odor which permeated her room and affected her own self-esteem.

The patient did in fact, begin to have a more positive attitude about herself when that odor disappeared and the bedsore was healing.

My second experience involved an elderly gentleman and his favourite recliner chair. This chair was saturated in several areas with urine, which made his room smell offensive. His daughter wanted to get rid of the chair and had tried several products which only temporarily masked the odor.

Shipboard use of Bacto-Zyme

Note: Bacto-Zyme is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “The On-Scene Coordinator may authorize the use of the biological additive (e.g. Bacto-Zyme) on releases of oil to the navigable waters of the United States on a case by case basis.”

Application 1: Engine Room Decks, bulkhead, Piping and Machinery

Method of use:
  • Mix Bacto-Zyme with warm water in a bucket or spray bottle. Use of a high-pressure waster spray is preferred for large and/or very oily areas.

  • Rinse with water.
  • Any unused mixture should be poured into a bilge well or oily deck drain to clean the drain lines, bilges and end up in oily water tank to help breakdown the oil in oily water.
Application 2: Parts and Filter Cleaning Machines

Method of use:
  • Fill parts cleaning machine with proper mix of Bacto-Zyme and water as above. Fill machine to proper working level per manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Load machine with parts and wash per machine manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Change Bacto-Zyme water mixture every month. Dump to bilge will to assist cleaning bilges, bilge system and oily water tank.
Application 3: M/E Scavenge Space and Piston Underside

Mixing Ratio:

  • Manual Pressure Washing: 75:1 with water temperature at 40-50 degrees C
  • Manual Wiping: 30:1 with water temperature at 40-50 degrees C
Method of use:

Pressure Wash:

  • Open engine scavenge space and/or piston underside space drains to oily water tank. Wash all areas, starting with overheads and sides and finish sweeping residue to drain hole.
  • No rinse is necessary
Hand Wiping:
  • Use 30:1 mix of Bacto-Zyme in 40-50 degrees C water
Application 4: Oily Water Holding Tank
Mixing Ratio:
  • One litre of Bacto-Zyme per three cubic meters (3 metric tons) of tank capacity with water temperature at 40-50 degrees C
Method of use:
  • Add one litre of Bacto-Zyme for each three metric tons capacity of the oily water holding tank.
  • Keep tank at 40-50 degrees C
  • Bubble air into bottom of the tank through a horizontal pipe with many holes drilled in it.
  • The air will aid the Bacto-Zyme in accelerating the growth and activity of the naturally occurring bacteria.
  • Normal retention time is minimum of five weeks for the enzymes to cause the oil to be broken down.
  • Monitor at least each day to check on the progress of remediation of the oily waste. Take water sample from the lower one half of the tank. Let it stand and settle. Check for oil on top of the water. If there is oil sheen present, increase the dose of Bacto-Zyme from one litre to three MT to 1 ½ litres. Increase again if necessary until the oil sheen completely disappears. The tank may then be pumped down by the amount that is below the test connection.

Note: the amount of Bacto-Zyme added per ton of holding tank capacity will have to be determined by the concentration of oil and grease and chemicals in the tank compared to the amount of water. This will of course, vary depending on usage.

Application 5: Bunker/fuel Tank Cleaning
Mixing Ratio:
  • For underway, in-tank cleaning (vessel rolling): Fill tank half full of water and add one litre of Bacto-Zyme per three Metric Tons of water added (at 40-50 degrees C)
  • For manual pressure washing: 75:1 (water temperature 40-50 degrees C)
  • For manual wiping: 30:1 (water temperature at 40-50 degrees C)
Method of use: Blank off fuel tank fill and suction lines to and from bunker tank.

Underway in Tank

  • Add Bacto-Zyme to tank through open tank through open tank manhole or pump in through tank connection
  • Close manhole if opened.
  • Fill tank to about ½ full with seawater.
  • Heat water to 40-50 C and maintain temperature.
  • Agitation promotes oxygen dispersal into mixture so a rolling ship is beneficial.
  • Allow up to five weeks retention time, if possible, then strip pump residue to oily water tank.
  • Open tank manholes and check. Tank may have to be rinsed.
  • Open all manholes and install blower to dry tank.
Pressure Wash:
  • Blank suction and fill lines and open all manholes.
  • Install blower and cross ventilate.
  • Wash all areas starting with over heads and sides and finish by seeping residue to oily water tank pump suction, using 75:1 mix ratio.
  • No rise is necessary
Hand Wiping
  • Set tank up as above
  • Wipe down tank using 30:1 mix ratio.
  • No rinse is normally necessary
Application 6: Sewage Treatment Plant
Mixing Ratio:
  • Initial: one litre per 1,000 litres of effluent.
  • Maintenance : One litre per 3,000 litres of effluent
Method of Use:
  • Drip feed one litre per 1,000 litres for plant inflow for the first month.
  • Introduce at galley dick drain so the Bacto-Zyme will keep drain lines and grease trap
  • Introduce at galley deck drain so that Bacto-Zyme will keep drain lines and grease trap in engine room free of grease on the way to the sewage treatment plant inlet.
  • After one month, drain system and sewage plant should be nearly clan and normalized out. Adjust drip rte to one litre per 3,000 litres of sewage plant inflow.
  • Bacto-Zyme will keep plant operating efficiently, eliminate sludge blanket bulk-up in the aerating and digesting compartment and eliminate odours. Ait will keep drain lines (from point of introduction) and grease trap clean, grease and odour fee.
  • Concentration may possibly be reduced depending on grease and sods loading of plant. Note: One man can use up to 756 litres of water per day. For a 14-man crew, this would be a total usage of 10,584 litres per day. The initial dosage would be 10.58 litres per day. After one month, dosage would be reduced to 3.5 litres per day.
Appliction 7: Gully and Mess Halls
Mixing ratio:
  • 30:1 with water temperature at 40-50 C
  • 75:1 for dishwashers
Method of Use:
  • Apply to bulkheads decks, appliances and work surfaces with a clean cloth, sponge, mop or sprayer.
  • Scrub and let stand for a few minutes.
  • Wipe dry with a clean cloth or dry mop
  • Deck Grease Traps:
  • Pour one pint daily into deck drain traps to prevent grease build up and eliminate odours.
  • Dishwashing:
  • Use a 75:1 mixture and add the same amount of mixture as for a dry detergent.
  • Greasy Pots and Pans;
  • In a sink use a 30:1 mix for pre soaking and washing.
  • Range Hoods:
  • Feed a 30:1 mix in through the hood washing system’s automatic chemical dispenser at the same rate as for standard range-hood degreasers. Adjust the rate up or down as necessary to prevent foaming.
  • In areas behind and under appliances that are hard to reach, slosh the area with a Bacto-Zyme mixture from a bucket. This will clean out grease, oil and dirt build-up and eliminate any odours.

Note: Galley fires are one of the main sources of fire aboard ship and are normally the result of grease build up due to lack of proper daily cleaning practices.

 

Application 8: Washrooms, Sinks, Showers, Decks and Bulkheads
Mixing Ratio:
  • 30:1 with water temperature at 40-50 C
Method of Use:
  • Mix Bacto-Zyme with warm water in a bucket or spray bottle.
  • Spray or wipe onto surfaces of deck, bulkheads, sinks, toilets, tubs and shower stalls with a cloth, sponge or mop.
  • Scrub thoroughly.
  • Wipe down and polish with a dry cloth.
Application 9: Topside Deck Cleaning

Mixing Ratio:

  • Manual Pressure Washing: 75:1 water at a temperature of 40-50 C.
  • Manual Swabbing and Wiping: 30:1 with water at a temperature of 40-50 C
Method of Use:
Pressure Washer:
  • Use pressure washer with water at 50 C
  • Wash all areas, starting with overheads and bulkheads and finish with deck using pressure wand to sweep wash water to scupper or deck drain hole.
  • No rinse is necessary.
  • If Painting is desired, surfaces will be ready to paint when dry.
Hand Wiping:
  • Use 30:1 mix at 40-50 C
  • No rinse is necessary

Note: any leftover mixture may be saved for later use or poured into ships waste water system to sewage plant or oily water tank. Bacto-Zyme will serve to keep drains clear and odour free and help the sewage plant to do its job. In the oily water tank Bacto-Zyme will assist in disposing of oil. The Bacto-Zyme mix may be poured over the side, as it contains no detergents or materials harmful to plants, fish or animals and will not cause sheen on the water.

Application 10: Fire Fighting and Oil Spills

Mixing Ratio: Mixed automatically via adaptor to fire hose foam educator nozzle.

Method of Use:

  • Five-gallon pails of Bacto-Zyme kept at various fire fighting stations such as shaft, alley, engine room, and on deck along with educator nozzles and foam applicators.
  • Educator tube is inserted into Bacto-Zyme pail.
  • Water is put on fire line and hose valve opened.
  • Water educts Bacto-Zyme from bucket and mixes to form foam from nozzle.

Fire: Foam is sprayed over any fire than plain water would be used on, to reduce heat of combustion as well as break up hydrocarbon molecules and surrounds them to deprive them of oxygen.

Oil Spills and Fires: Use educator with foam applicator same as above to spray water/Bacto-Zyme over oil. Oil will disperse and sheen will disappear. Any fire threat will be greatly reduced or eliminated as hydrocarbon molecules are broken down and covered with a blanket of Bacto-Zyme foam.
